The Book Club meets the first Wednesday of the month at 10:30 AM in Emma’s Culinary Garden!

The Members choose a book to read each month and then discuss it at the monthly meeting. If you enjoy reading for pleasure and would like to join our discussions, we welcome you to our meetings.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 6, from10:30 to 11:30 in Emma’s Kitchen. The book for discussion is When We Believed in Mermaids, by Barbara O’Neal. I can lead the discussion but would gladly yield if someone else is interested. I can provide a file with a synopsis and discussion questions already prepared. Below is the list of titles for the last two months of this year. Following that is a list of titles for the first seven months of next year.

·   November 3: The Four Winds, by Kristin Hannah (Jonda Taylor)

·   December 1: The Vineyard at Painted Moon, by Susan Mallery (looking for a volunteer)

The books suggested for next year are as follows (I tried to put them in order so that the topics are a little different from month to month, but that can be changed. I listed A Land Remembered by Patrick D. Smith first because it is rather lengthy, and since we won’t be meeting in January, it will provide more time to read it.):

  • February 2: A Land Remembered by Patrick D. Smith
  • March 2: The Daughters of Erietown by Connie Schultz
  • April 7: The Vanishing Half by Brick Bennett
  • May 4:  The Address: A Novel by Fiona Davis
  • June 1: The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister
  • July 6: The Woman with the Blue Star by Pam Jenoff
  • August 3: The Hideaway by Lauren K. Denton

·   September 7: The Warsaw Orphan by Kellly Rimmer (Barb Field). Synopsis - "In the spring of 1942, young Elzbieta Rabinek is aware of the swiftly growing discord just beyond the courtyard of her comfortable Warsaw home. She has no fondness for the Germans who patrol her streets and impose their curfews, but has never given much thought to what goes on behind the walls that contain her Jewish neighbors. She knows all too well about German brutality--and that it's the reason she must conceal her true identity. But in befriending Sara, a nurse who shares her apartment floor, Elzbieta makes a discovery that propels her into a dangerous world of deception and heroism. Using Sara's credentials to smuggle children out of the ghetto brings Elzbieta face-to-face with the reality of the war behind its walls, and to the plight of the Gorka family, who must make the impossible decision to give up their newborn daughter or watch her starve. For Roman Gorka, this final injustice stirs him to rebellion with a zeal not even his newfound love for Elzbieta can suppress. But his recklessness brings unwanted attention to Sara's cause, unwittingly putting Elzbieta and her family in harm's way until one violent act threatens to destroy their chance at freedom forever. From Nazi occupation to the threat of a communist regime, The Warsaw Orphan is the unforgettable story of Elzbieta and Roman's perilous attempt to reclaim the love and life they once knew.

10/5: The Venice Sketchbook by Rhys Bowen (tentative; ??). Synopsis - "Caroline Grant is struggling to accept the end of her marriage when she receives an unexpected bequest. Her beloved great-aunt Lettie leaves her a sketchbook, three keys, and a final whisper. . .Venice. Caroline’s quest: to scatter Juliet “Lettie” Browning’s ashes in the city she loved and to unlock the mysteries stored away for more than 60 years. It’s 1938 when art teacher Juliet Browning arrives in romantic Venice. For her students, it’s a wealth of history, art, and beauty. For Juliet, it’s poignant memories and a chance to reconnect with Leonardo Da Rossi, the man she loves whose future is already determined by his noble family. However star-crossed, nothing can come between them. Until the threat of war closes in on Venice and they’re forced to fight, survive, and protect a secret that will bind them forever. Key by key, Lettie’s life of impossible love, loss, and courage unfolds. It’s one that Caroline can now make right again as her own journey of self-discovery begins."

I think we have a great list of titles for part of next year, but please be thinking of suggestions for September through December. In the past, the rule has been that if you suggested a book, you led the discussion. However, since Debra suggested several of the books, I don’t expect her to lead them all. Please let me know if you would like to lead the discussion for one of the titles.

For new members, if you would like a synopsis for each of the titles for next year, I would be happy to provide them. As always, everyone is invited to lunch in The Grille after the meeting.

Thanks,

Barb Field
